The collaborative standards development and research efforts resulted numerous new CBRN respirator standards, one being the NIOSH CBRN APR certification standard, dated March 7, 2003.Īs emergency responders face new challenges and train to meet the demands of the evolving emergency response environment, this interim CBRN APR guidance document provides vital options for consideration in the development of CBRN respirator protection programs, training standards, purchase specifications and logistical concerns. NIOSH, the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST), the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding defining each agency or organization’s role in developing, establishing, and enforcing standards for respirators. In 1999, the InterAgency Board for Equipment Standardization and InterOperability (IAB) identified the need for the development of standards or guidelines for respiratory protection equipment as a top priority. The NIOSH CBRN APR respirator certification standards are the result of collaboration between numerous agencies such as the United States Army’s Research, Development and Engineering Command (RDECOM), private civilian standards and certification organizations, and civilian respirator users and user associations. Users should periodically check the NIOSH National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory website, below, for additional user guidelines related to NIOSH-approved CBRN respirators. A peer reviewed NIOSH numbered publication will supersede this interim guidance in the near future.
